as i looked into the photograph, i noticed in the background my friend years ago. she wasn’t a friend then, someone that just walked into the background while i was pushing the button on my moms camera that she loaned me for a fun filled week at camp. as the years went by, the picture got filed away and forgotten. years later, while looking for an old photograph of me and some friends in grade school, i found sara in the background. so, loudly i called my family to look at the magic picture. then carefully i put it back in the envelope and wrote ‘a nice surprise’ on it. then, next time she came over, which seemed to be all the time, i gave her the envelope and told her to look through it to see some of our friends when we were young. as she reached the picture, nothing happened, no response, no screaming (as was expected), nothing. i know she saw, you couldn’t miss her, it was very obvious. but she acted cool about it and didn’t let it bother her. she just kept on flipping. “sara! that’s a picture of you, before i knew you.” “yup.” my efforts were useless, she just wasn’t going to get excited like was. as time proceeded, she got excited about things i didn’t, i got excited about things that she didn’t. we just started drifting apart. mainly because she annoyed me. but mostly because we didn’t have much to talk about anymore. after a few more years, i went away to college and came back as she left for a similar school in sweden. when she came back, it being two and a half or three years, our old group wanted to hang out again. all saying she had changed while in the foreign school. maybe now, since she went to the same school, we’d have something to talk about. times didn’t change much. she still laughed at stuff i didn’t find amusing. she still said things that i thought were dumb. i felt bad for not liking her. i tried, but no luck. some people just aren’t meant to be friends for a long time. i only talk to one or two people i knew in high school.
