So I’m sitting here, mid-day Tuesday, waiting to go into work. It’s not that I’m going to work; I’m going in to the office that tells me what building I’m cleaning. Let’s not start with Tuesday though. Let’s start with some time last month, toward the beginning. Mike came up to me and told me that something was going to happen. Wait, we need to go further back to establish who this Mike is. I have a Job. I work for ABS, nope, GCA, they like to change names that way new customers won’t hear to complaints about the company. GCA is a janitorial service, we clean shit. Our company gets contracts with other businesses like hospitals and the like. Hugh is my boss and GCA, Mike has hired GCA to clean the building he manages (being Overlake Hospital Medical Center). So Mike is, in a turn, my boss. Mike is telling me that something is going to happen, but I don’t have to worry about it because he, his boss and the other 5 people that work for GVA Kidders-Mathew (a property management company) like me and “have my back.” A week later, nothing has happened. Mike, again, is telling me that something is happening, this time he’ll tell me what it is. My company, GCA/ABS, whatever, is getting rid of all of the accounts in the building I work in except common areas and my position. So I have nothing to worry about. A few more weeks go by and Mike’s, once again, saying cryptic things to me that eventually lead to my understanding that Mike is firing Hugh (to put it overly simply) but since Mike likes me, he’s arranged for the new company to hire me with greater pay! Brilliant! Lets look at the only problem with a bit of exposition, Heidi, my wife, is pregnant, therefore we need health coverage. The new company doesn’t have it. I can get it through Regency Blue Shield, but it’ll cost me $300+. So I can’t take it. I also can’t tell Hugh, because Mike hasn’t told Hugh and I am not supposed to know what’s going on until Hugh tells me. Two weeks ago, the week we leave for Ireland: Hugh gets a fax from Mike telling him that GCABS has two weeks notice to get all their stuff out of the building. A couple days go by and I don’t hear from Hugh, so I call him. He tells me all the things I already know. “But,” he says, “we’ll have a day position for you when you get back from you vacation. Just call me that Monday morning.” That was yesterday, no place. I go in today at 3 pm to hear that the only day porter (my title, fancyspeak for janitor that works during the day) position open is in North Bend, approximately 1 hr by car and 2-3 by moped. Or, I can work an evening position, which looks like this;

  • Sunday 6pm-3:30am
  • Monday 6pm-3:30am
  • Tuesday 6pm-3:30am
  • Wednesday 6pm-3:30am
  • Thursday 6pm-3:30am
  • Friday Off
  • Saturday Off

As you can see, that pretty much messes up my week, no Moped Monday, no church/Dubliner, no Tuesday bible study, no Wednesday West Wing. Maybe I’ll look for a new job.
