it’s been seven years since i’ve read 1984, but for some reason i am compelled to pick it up again, and read. i normally don’t read prefaces and introductions, but walter cronkite wrote this one in 1983, and it intrigued me to know what he had to say about the impending year:

sure, i’m being a bit paranoid, which isn’t like me, but everything that’s happened in the last week has produced a lot of hype about better “intelligence” and security, but i don’t think we want it at our privacy. maybe i’ve watched arlington road or enemy of the states too much.
