might have kept her near. maybe if i would have looked up when she kissed my head goodbye she wouldn’t have dated my neighbor. when the phone rang that evening, i had no idea what was going on. when she asked if she could come over, i knew something was up, mostly because she never asked, just dropped by. i was in the kitchen cooking when she showed up, my dad in the shower, mom and sister gone somewhere, probably a church function. she came in, sat down, made uncomfortable small talk as i put the lid on and let it simmer, that was about the time she asked me to sit down. since it seemed she was in talking mode and not up for playing, i sat on the chair across from her. it took some breathing, but she finally got out that we were “in two different worlds.” this whole concept seemed contrary to the thoughts i had of her and i being made for each other, but i knew that my saying anything wouldn’t change her, i simply told her that i couldn’t ask why, because that would satisfy my feelings. so, gently, she kissed my head, and left me to my cooking. a few weeks later, while i was sitting in the computer room which looked down onto the neighbors house, i noticed her car sitting out front. of course i never thought it’d last. eventually i got over her leaving, we started to become friends again, her new boyfriend, my neighbor friend (neighbor friendships are always different than other friendships) and i started spending time together, rarely as three, it was either two, four or many. the reason i didn’t think it’d last; we’d dated twice before, making a total of three times with the same girl in 4 years meant that i knew her, and how fickle she was, never having a relationship that lasted more than a few months, of course leave it to the boy next door to make it almost a year with her. any news i get about her anymore comes from him or his family, who, i believe is just doing it to rub it in my face. what they don’t know is that a few months after she broke up with him, her and i went out and had a little fun, nothing too much she needed to be home by midnight. she’s getting married next month, i haven’t talked to her in over a year, nor have i met the guy, at least it’s not him, maybe i’ll get an invitation. i found out from the neighbor sister.
