across the parking lot from us lived a sweet widow named bernie. i think she was a widow. rob, ryan, and i would go over there almost every day to get candy. she always had some. she taught us please and thank you. her house always had a certain smell to it. i didn’t find out till years later it was moth balls, and that’s how old people’s houses were supposed to smell, mine will. after we moved out and grew up. after robby and ryan moved to california then to brememerton then back home. we went over to visit her. she was still alive and kicking. she still had candy. she still had moth balls. she still made us say please and thank you. it was kind of sad to see her though. while she didn’t look any older than she did when i was 4 (you look your oldest to a 4 year old), she seemed older, sadder. yet she still had her joy. two doors away from me, in the opposite direction from ryan and rob’s, lived an elderly gentleman who gave us fortune cookies. we liked him too. i don’t know what happened to him.
