Ira Glass on Story Telling
Ira Glass, of This American Life, has a way to make stories interesting. Even if you're not making videos or on the radio this is good advice on how to share an anecdote.

On Cribs and Toddler Beds
Dotty (our 19 month old) has moved from the crib to the toddler bed in preperation for baby number 3 who is scheduled to show up in a month or so. She's having her first nap now. We'll see how that goes.

Wednesday
getting ready to go pick up some petfood. I've had a good day. Enjoyed reading some John Owen. And am saddened by sin.

"This battle will last more or less all our days. If sin is always acting, we are in trouble if we are not always mortifying. He that stands still and allows his enimies to exert double blows upon him without resistance will undoubtedly be conquered in the end. If sin is subtle, watchful, strong, and always at work in the business of killing our souls, and we are slothful, negligent, and foolish in this battle, can we expect a favourable outcome?"

I'm reading "The Mortification of Sin" and this line really stuck out - "always be killing sin or it will always be killing you."

Song's for the Girls
Here's a lullaby CD that Heidi and I made for our girls. Almost every song has a reason it belongs on here;
- Till There Was You - The Beatles - Live at the BBC
- Halfway Down the Stairs - Robin the Frog - Muppet Show
- Yuma, AZ - Damien Jurado - Waters Ave S.
- Girl - The Beatles - Rubber Soul
- Dance Hall Places - Mint Royale - Dancehall Places
- (They Long To Be) Close To You - Carpenters - Singles 1969-1981
- Edelweiss - Charmian Carr & Bill Lee - The Sound Of Music
- Stay Awake - Julie Andrews - Mary Poppins
- Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star - Raffi - One Light One Sun
- My Jesus I Love Thee - E-Pop - Mars Hill Church Music
- Jesus Loves Me - Bobby Pinson - Man Like Me
- Be Thou My Vision - Pedro the Lion - The Only Reason I Feel Secure
Halfway Down the Stairs is a song that I grew up with and knew my whole life that it was one I'd sing to my kids, I also put it on the first mix I made for Heidi a few days after we met. It's kind of obscure, but certainly worth learning for your kids.
Yuma, AZ is one that I first heard in college and thought it'd make a good lullaby. Eve calls it the "dancing with grandpa song."
Girl is one of Heidi's. It's just another song she loves.
Dance Hall Places started out as a ringtone I made for Heidi's phone that Evelyn started asking for.
I've always felt that (They Long to Be) Close to You sounds like a song that should have come from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But, it's one of Heidi's favorite songs to sing to the girls.
I was in The Sound of Music in High School and had to learn Edelweiss and it just sort of stuck around.
When my sister and I were real little, my parents put a tape recorder next to the mono-speaker for our TV when Marry Poppins was on and recorded Stay Awake. We wore that tape out. I think the RIAA might not like that my parents did this, but the evidence has vanished.
What's there to say about Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star?
Eve loves singing all the songs from Mars Hill. My Jesus I Love Thee was chosen for this mix due to it being one of the mellowest songs we have from church.
It is next to impossible to find a decent version of Jesus Loves Me. I've never actually heard of Bobby Pinson until tonight, but his version is pretty good. Someone out there have a Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson version?
Heidi always closes her lullaby set with Be Thou My Vision, and Pedro the Lion is pretty relaxing, so it works. I fell asleep listening to him tune up once at TOM Fest.
At some point I'll make a muxtape of this album. But I need to convert some of the files as a few are protected and some are just in the wrong format. There are also a few songs that didn't make the cut. Maybe I'll make a b-sides some day.
But, I'm interested to know what you sing (or will) to your kids. Have you made a mix for them?

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
Really excited about this show. Head over to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog to find out more.
Joss Whedon, the guy behind Firefly is the mad genius behind the whole thing and has this to say;
Once upon a time, all the writers in the forest got very mad with the Forest Kings and declared a work-stoppage. The forest creatures were all sad; the mushrooms did not dance, the elderberries gave no juice for the festival wines, and the Teamsters were kinda pissed. (They were very polite about it, though.) During this work-stoppage, many writers tried to form partnerships for outside funding to create new work that circumvented the Forest King system.
Frustrated with the lack of movement on that front, I finally decided to do something very ambitious, very exciting, very mid-life-crisisy. Aided only by everyone I had worked with, was related to or had ever met, I single-handedly created this unique little epic. A supervillain musical, of which, as we all know, there are far too few.
The idea was to make it on the fly, on the cheap – but to make it. To turn out a really thrilling, professionalish piece of entertainment specifically for the internet. To show how much could be done with very little. To show the world there is another way. To give the public (and in particular you guys) something for all your support and patience. And to make a lot of silly jokes. Actually, that sentence probably should have come first.
He will post the first installment on July 15th, the second on the 17th, and the third and last on the 19th. Then on the 20th at midnight "they will vanish into the night, like a phantom (but not THE Phantom – that’s still playing. Like, everywhere.)"
